G.C. Foster College student, Orrin Powell, threw the javelin 70.23 metres yesterday at the Lucozade GC Foster College Classic to set a new national record for the event.

Powell's mark smashed the 68.97 metres set way back in 2003 by Robert Barnes.

The former Vere Technical High student, coached by Edwin Allen High's ace throwing coach Marlon Gayle, was elated with his performance.

"It is a good feeling to know that I have done something great and I would like to thank my coach, Mr Gayle, who has been working hard with me, along with principal of G.C. Foster College, Mr Shakes, who gave me a scholarship to attend the institution," said Powell.

Former Wolmer's Boys sprinter, Julian Forte, was also in fine form at the meet. The University of Technology student, back in competition after pulling up injured in the 200-metre final at last year's World Junior Championships in Barcelona, was the only sprinter to go under 11 seconds in the 100 metres at the meet.

Forte stopped the clock

Running against a strong head wind, Forte stopped the clock at 10.88 seconds. The University of Technology (UTech) swept the first three places Davion Haye (11.22) and Tyquendo Tracy (11.27) finished second and third, respectively.

Unlike previous years, the meet was very low-key as it was being held just three days ahead of the start of the annual Boys and Girls' Championships and athletes from the top schools were absent.

"I am looking forward to the meet again next year," G.C. Foster principal, Shakes said. "With the high-school championships so close this (low participation by the high school athletes) was expected, but at the same time, it was good to see a lot of athletes from colleges and clubs and some from non-traditional high schools."

World Championships representative Wilbert Walker was also in good form in the triple jump as he produced a winning leap of 15.70m. G.C. Foster athletes Jerome Morgan (14.10m) and Alton Palmer (13.95m) were second and third, respectively.
